The Difference between assessment of learning and assessment for learning

 Assessment of Learning:

  • It inludes final exams, standardized tests, end-of-unit tests, etc.
  • The feedback it is often in the form of grades or scores that provide a summary of students' achievements.
  • It occurs after learning has taken place, typically at the end of a term, unit, or course.
  • Results are used to make decisions about student progression, certification, and curriculum effectiveness.
  • Assessment for Learning:

    • Formative and is designed to provide feedback during the learning process to improve and guide students' learning. Its primary goal is to support and enhance learning as it happens.

    • E.g,. Quizzes, observational assessments, peer reviews, self-assessments, and informal checks for understanding.

    • The feedback is more detailed and constructive, focusing on helping students understand their strengths and areas for improvement.

    • It occurs continuously throughout the instructional period, often integrated into daily classroom activities.

    • Results are used to inform instructional adjustments, provide timely feedback to students, and help students set learning goals.
